Celebrating the Next Generation on National Grandchild Day

May 12th marked National Grandchild Day—a time to reflect on the joy, hope, and legacy our grandchildren bring into our lives. As I think of my grandchildren and the world they're growing up in, I find myself returning to timeless wisdom that continues to guide me. The following poem, originally written by humorist and educator Sam Levenson, is a gentle reminder of what true beauty means. I offer it here as a letter to the next generation, from my heart to yours.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.

For attractive eyes, seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it.

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, even more than things, must be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older, you’ll discover that you have two hands: one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.

May all your days be blessed with health, happiness, and love.
